A novel liquid-crystal compound represented by general formula (1), which is highly dielectrically anisotropic, reduced in the temperature dependence of threshold voltage, and improved in the solubility in other liquid-crystal materials at low temperature,(wherein R is C1-C10 alkyl, alkoxy or the like; m and n are each independently O or 1; A1, A2 and A3 are each independently trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene wherein one or more hydrogen atoms on the ring may be replaced by fluorine atoms, or the like; Z1, Z2 and Z3 are each indepentently -C00-, -0C0-, -(CH2)2-, -CH20-, -0CH2- or a covalent bond, with at least one of them being an ester linkage, -CH20- or -0CH2-; X is CF3, CF2H or the like; and Y is H or F); and a liquid-crystal composition and liquid-crystal display device prepared by using this compound. |
