abstract The present invention provides: a composite material which comprises a thermoplastic matrix resin and carbon fibers A comprising carbon fiber bundles A1 in which Li/(Ni×Di2) is 6.7×101 to 3.3×103, wherein the carbon fibers A have a fiber length of 5-100 mm and the carbon fiber bundles A1 are contained in an amount of 80 vol% or larger but less than 100 vol% with respect to the carbon fibers A and wherein removal of the matrix resin from the composite material gives a carbon fiber mass which, when compressed to a thickness of Tf, has a repulsive force P of 0.05-1.00 MPa; and a method for producing the composite material, the method comprising subjecting a composite composition comprising carbon fibers and a thermoplastic resin to an impregnation treatment with a compression/impregnation device. Li is the fiber length (mm) of the carbon fiber bundles. Di is the single-filament diameter (mm) of the carbon fibers constituting the carbon fiber bundles. Ni is the number of single-filament fibers contained in the carbon fiber bundles. Tf is [(basis weight of the carbon fiber mass)/(density of the carbon fibers)]×3 (mm).
