abstract | Provided is a coated nickel hydroxide powder which is suitable for use as a positive electrode active material of an alkaline secondary battery, and with which uniformity and adhesive properties of a coating having cobalt oxyhydroxide as a main component thereof are ensured when said coating is formed on surfaces of nickel-hydroxide-powder particles. The pH of a suspension solution of a nickel hydroxide powder is maintained in the range 8-11.5. The ratio ρ /(d × v) of the supply rate (ρ) of a cobalt salt aqueous solution, to the product of the flow rate (v) of the suspension solution and the supply width (d) of the cobalt salt aqueous solution in the direction orthogonal to the flow direction of the suspension solution in a contact part is regulated so as to be not more than 3.5×10 -4 mol/cm 2 . The cobalt salt aqueous solution and an alkaline aqueous solution are supplied, and surfaces of nickel hydroxide particles are coated with cobalt hydroxide. Thereafter, the pH of a slurry of the cobalt-hydroxide-coated nickel hydroxide powder is set so as to be at least 12.5, and the cobalt hydroxide is oxidized by supplying oxygen such that the total supply amount of oxygen is at least 30 l/mol of the molar quantity of cobalt in the coating. |
