Polyglycerol monoethers represented by the general formula (1): RO-(C3H6O2)n-H (1) (wherein R is an alcohol residue having 1 to 30 carbon atoms; and n represents the average number of glycerol molecules added and is 2 or above), which have monoether contents (in terms of peak area percentage) of 75 % or above and diether contents (in terms of peak area percentage) of 5 % or below, as determined by reversed-phase partition-type high-performance liquid chromatography (with an eluent consisting of methanol and water at a volume ratio of 80 : 20). The polyglycerol monoethers can be produced by adding a basic substance to an alcohol to form an alkoxide and then adding glycidol to the reaction mixture to conduct a reaction at 0 to 100˚C. |
