A silsesquioxane derivative (PSQ derivative) which is for use as an electronic material, optical material, electrooptic material, or catalyst support; and a process for producing the derivative. Conventional PSQ derivatives have a problem that they have poor compatibility with general organic polymers. The novel PSQ derivative has improved compatibility with general organic polymers. The process enables the derivative to be produced in a short time at low cost. The PSQ derivative is represented by the formula (1). It is utilizable as an additive for improving the flame retardancy, heat resistance, weatherability, light resistance, electrical insulating properties, surface properties, hardness, mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and other properties of general organic polymers. (1) In the formula (1), R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, or arylalkyl; and at least one of Y's is a group represented by the formula (2): (2) (wherein R1 and R2 each independently has the same meaning as R, and Z preferably is a functional group or a group having the functional group) and the remainder of Y's are hydrogen. |
