abstract | The present invention provides a lateral electric field drive type liquid crystal display element which is imparted with high efficiency and orientation control ability and is excellent in image sticking characteristics. The present invention includes (A) a photosensitive side chain polymer that exhibits liquid crystallinity within a predetermined temperature range, (B) a hydroxy group, a hydroxyalkyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkoxyalkyl group, an oxirane group, an epoxy group, and an isocyanate. A crosslinkable compound having two or more substituents per molecule selected from a group, an oxetane group, a cyclocarbonate group, a trialkoxysilyl group, and a polymerizable unsaturated bond group, and (C) an organic solvent The above problems are solved by the polymer composition contained. In particular, [I] a step of applying the composition onto a substrate having a conductive film for driving a transverse electric field to form a coating film; [II] irradiating the coating film obtained in [I] with polarized ultraviolet rays. And a step of heating the coating film obtained in [III] and [II]. A liquid crystal alignment film for obtaining a liquid crystal alignment film for a lateral electric field drive type liquid crystal display element to which alignment control ability is imparted.
