NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R 1 is 4W18C alkyl or alkoxy; R 2 is R 1 , acyl or alkoxycarbonyl; at least one of R 1 and R 2 is optically active group; one of X 1 and X 2 is halogen and the other is H; m and n are 0 or 1; m+n is 0 or 1). n EXAMPLE: Optically active 3-fluoro-4-(1-methyl-heptyloxy)benzoic acid 4'- octyloxy-4-biphenylyl ester. n USE: A component of chiral smectic liquid crystal composition. It is an optically active liquid crystal compound having high ferroelectric property and used as a component of an optical switching element or an agent for preventing the formation of reverse domain. n PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the halide of the substituted benzoic acid or substituted biphenylcarboxylic acid of formula II with the substituted phenol compound or substituted phenylphenol of formula III in a basic solvent such as pyridine. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio |
