abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R represents 1W20C alkyl or alkoxyl; R* represents optically active alkyl; X and Y represent H, F or Cl provided that X and Y are same but not H). n EXAMPLE: 4-(S)-2-Methylbutyloxycarbonyl-3-fluorophenyl, 4-dodecyloxybenzoate. n USE: One component of liquid crystal compositions. The component is a colorless liquid crystal compound having a superior light and chemical stability and exhibits chiral smectic phase at around room temperature. It can be formed into a thin layer (1W20μm) with uniform thickness sandwiched between two transparent electrode plates to form a liquid crystal display cell, which can be used as a photo-switching element for the liquid crystal display having quick response and good memory properties. n PREPARATION: An acid compound expressed by formula II is reacted with an optically active alkyl ester derivative of p-hydroxybenzoic acid expressed by formula III in an organic solvent to obtain the compound expressed by formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1986,JPO&Japio
