abstract (57) [Problem] It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel biphenyl derivative having an oxetane ring, which can be synthesized from easily available raw materials, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method of reacting a 3-alkyl-3-hydroxymethyloxetane or 3-hydroxymethyloxetane with an alkali metal hydroxide to form the alkali metal alcoholate, and subsequently converting the alkali metal alcoholate to 4,4 ′. -Bis (chloromethyl) biphenyl is achieved by a process for producing a novel biphenyl derivative having an oxetane ring, characterized by reacting with a bis (chloromethyl) biphenyl.
