abstract |
A process for efficiently and easily producing an oxetane ring-containing biphenyl compound represented by the following general formula (2) through a single reaction step. It comprises reacting a 3-hydroxymethyloxetane compound represented by the following general formula (1) with 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl in a reaction solvent in the presence of a base, wherein the reaction solvent is a nonaromatic (e.g., aliphatic) hydrocarbon and the base is an alkali metal hydroxide. Preferably, the reaction is conducted while removing by-product water as an azeotropic mixture with the reaction solvent. |
