The present invention provides a method for producing 3-hydroxybutyric acid or a salt thereof at low cost, simply and with high efficiency. A method for producing 3-hydroxybutyric acid or a salt thereof comprising the following steps (1) to (3): (1) a halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Halomonas, an inorganic salt, and a single or a plurality of organic carbons Step 1 of aerobic culture in a medium containing a source. (2) The process 2 which changes the culture condition of the process 1 from aerobic culture to microaerobic culture, culture | cultivates the said microbial cell, and produces 3-hydroxybutyric acid or its salt with a culture solution. (3) Step 3 for recovering 3-hydroxybutyric acid or a salt thereof from the culture solution obtained in Step 2. [Selection figure] None |
