The present invention relates to novel thioflavin derivatives, such as the use of the derivatives in in vivo imaging of patients with senile plaques, pharmaceutical compositions containing the thioflavin derivatives, and methods of synthesizing the compounds. The compounds are particularly used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases in which the accumulation of senile plaques is prevalent.
