titleOfInvention Coating of filaments by sputter-ion-plating
abstract A process for coating the surface of a fibre for use in a metal matrix composite material in which the fibre is drawn continuously through a plasma discharge in a hollow cathode electrode 5 the inner wall 14 of which at least is made of a material to be deposited on the fibre. A potential may be applied to the fibre to assist the deposition of the material from the plasma and a plasma forming inert gas eg argan may be introduced into the region within the hollow electrode. The fibre may be monofilament of silicon carbide and the hollow cylindrical electrode may be made of titanium. Alternatively the electrode may be made of alternate plates of titanium and carbon which are energised separately thereby to enable titanium carbide of differing non-stoichiometric composition to be deposited upon the silicon carbide fibre. More than one electrode may be provided so that the fibre passes through them sequentially to form a multi-layer coating upon the fibre. <IMAGE>
