The invention concerns the use of purified phage lysins for decomposing bacteria cells, cellular bacterial components being released by the effect of the purified phage lysins and detected according to known methods. The invention further concerns methods of detecting bacteria by using conventional detection reactions on cellular bacterial components in a bacteria lysate, the lysate being obtained by the effect of a purified phage lysin on the bacteria. The invention finally concerns combinations of bacteria-detecting reagents containing a purified phage lysin in addition to conventional detection means. The sequences of lysins PLY118, PLY500 and PLY511 and the lysin-coding genes ply118, ply500 and ply511 are disclosed. |
