abstract The invention provides methods and kits for rapid detection of viable microorganisms including bacteria. The invention provides an enzyme detection system comprising synthetic substrates that are cleaved in the presence of an enzyme of a microorganism to release a tag which can be a fluorescent tag. The invention further provides a color developer that renders the tag visible in light other than ultraviolet light.
