A novel transition metal compound represented by general formula (I) and a process for polymerizing an olefin in the presence of this compound and a cocatalyst, wherein A?1, A?2, A?3 and A?4 represent each cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, fluorenyl or a derivative thereof; A?5 represents C4? to C30? hydrocarbondiylidene; a pair of A?1 and A?2 and a pair of A?3 and A?4 are each combined with one and the same carbon atom of A?5 to form a bridged structure; R?1 and R?2 may be the same or different from each other and each represents halogen, hydrogen, C1? to C10? alkyl, silicon-containing alkyl, C6? to C20? aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl or haloaryl; and M?1 and M?2 may be the same or different from each other and each represents titanium, zirconium or hafnium. The use of a combination of the above transition metal compound with other well-known transition metal compound(s) enables the production of a polyolefin with a wide molecular weight distribution. |
