abstract The present invention relates to a serum-free solution for cryopreserving hepatocytes comprising a histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutaric acid (HTK) solution, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dexamethasone, and human serum albumin. By adding dexamethasone and/or N-acetylcysteine to conventional cryopreservative solutions, a hepatocyte survival rate, an ammonia removal rate, a urea synthesis rate, and an albumin secretion rate are enhanced as compared to conventional cryopreservative solutions.
