abstract Provided is a method for measuring whether a subject has the ability to produce equol. Provided is a method for measuring the ability of a subject to produce equol characterized in that an equol-converting enzyme gene derived from the intestinal bacteria of the subject is detected using the three primers sets a)-c) below. a) A primer pair comprising an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 1 and an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 2, or a primer pair comprising complementary sequences that correspond to said base sequences. b) A primer pair comprising an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 3 and an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 4, or a primer pair comprising complementary sequences that correspond to said base sequences. c) A primer pair comprising an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 5 and an oligonucleotide that comprises a base sequence shown by SEQ ID NO: 6 or 7, or a primer pair comprising complementary sequences that correspond to said base sequences.
