abstract The present invention is directed to a process for the manufacture of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol by reacting phenol or ortho-cresol or 2,6-xylenol with methanol in the gas phase and in the presence of a catalyst, whereby the catalyst comprises Ga 2 O 3 or additionally MgO. Catalysts consisting of Ga 2 O 3 or catalysts consisting of Ga 2 O 3 and MgO may also be used successfully.
