titleOfInvention | Preparation of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol |
abstract | 1451091 Preparation of 2,4,6-trimethyl phenol TEIJIN Ltd 4 Oct 1973 46498/73 Heading C2C 2,4,6-Trimethylphenol is prepared by reacting a phenol of formula - in which each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, represents a hydrogen atom or methyl group, with methanol in the vapour phase, in the presence of a magnesium oxide containing catalyst at a temperature of 400‹ to 500‹ C., the gaseous mixture composed essentially of the phenol and methanol being contacted with the catalyst at a flow rate not greater than 0-4/hour (weight in grams of the phenol and methanol/gram of catalyst/hour). The catalyst used preferably has a pKa value of 4À8 to 18À4 and a pore radius of 20-200 Š. |
