The present invention discloses a liquid random copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefin, and a method for preparing same, wherein said copolymer is useful as a synthetic lubricating oil having high viscosity index and shear stability using a specific metallocene catalyst and an ionic compound. The liquid random copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefin (1) consists of 40 to 60 mol% of ethylene unit and 60 to 40 mol% of alpha-olefin unit having the number of carbon atoms of 3 to 20, (2) has a number-average molecular weight (Mn) 500 to 10,000 measured by a gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) and the distribution of molecular weight (Mw/Mn, wherein Mw is weight-average molecular weight) is 3 or less, (3) has kinematic viscosity 30 to 5,000 at 100 ̊C, (4) has pour point 30 to -45 ̊C, and (5) has a bromine number 0.1 or less. |
