abstract Provided is a liquid crystal composition which fulfills at least one of characteristics including high upper-limit temperature of nematic phase, low lower-limit temperature of nematic phase, low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, large dielectric anisotropy, large specific resistance, high ultraviolet stability, high heat stability, large elastic constant, and so on, or which exhibits appropriate balance between at least two of these characteristics. Also provided is an AM element which exhibits a short response time, a high voltage holding ratio, a high contrast ratio, a long life, and so on.nA liquid crystal composition which comprises, as a first component, a compound with a large dielectric anisotropy, said compound having difluoromethyleneoxy group and trifluoromethyl group, and, as a second component, a specific compound with a small dielectric anisotropy and has a nematic phase, and a liquid crystal display element that contains the composition.
