abstract Provided is an organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) which improves element light-emission efficiency, guarantees sufficient drive stability, and has a simple structure. The organic electroluminescent element has a plurality of organic layers between a positive pole and a negative pole laminated on a substrate, wherein at least one organic layer comprises a nitrogen-containing aromatic compound represented by formula (1). In formula (1), X is N-A, oxygen, or sulfur; A is an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, or an aromatic heterocyclic group; and R is hydrogen, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, or an aromatic heterocyclic group.
