Disclosed is an efficient method of producing optically active alcohols using a modified carbonyl reductase having an elevated level of reactivity in the presence of halogen, in particular elevated to a level higher than that of wild-type enzymes, and using said enzymes. The modified carbonyl reductase having an elevated level of reactivity in the presence of halogen, in particular elevated to a level higher than that of wild-type enzymes, is isolated from the modified carbonyl reductase library produced by introducing random mutations into wild-type enzyme genes. Disclosed are said enzyme, the DNA encoding said enzyme, transformants producing said enzyme, and an efficient method of producing optically active alcohols using these. |
