Disclosed is a method for producing Li-containing α-sialon fluorescent particles, which involves: mixing an aluminum source containing AlN, a Li source, an Eu source, and silicon nitride or a silicon nitride-containing compound power; obtaining a Lithium-containing α-sialon power, which functions as a starting material, by firing the aforementioned mixture at 1500 to 1800°C in an inactive gas atmosphere, which contains nitrogen and which has a normal pressure; adding and mixing an additional lithium source to said powder; and re-firing said mixture at a temperature lower than the aforementioned firing temperature or at 1100°C or higher and lower than 1600°C in an inactive gas atmosphere, which contains nitrogen and which has a normal pressure. As a consequence, the light absorptivity and the fluorescence intensity of the Li (Lithium)-containing α-sialon fluorescent substance emitting short wavelength fluorescence is improved. Also provided are an illumination device and an image display device which uses said fluorescent substance. |
