Disclosed is a liquid crystalline compound which has general physical properties necessary for liquid crystalline compounds, stability with respect to heat, light and the like, a low viscosity, an adequate refractive anisotropy value, an adequate dielectric anisotropy value, steep electro-optic characteristics, a wide temperature range of the nematic phase, and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds, in particular, a liquid crystalline compound which has a wide temperature range of the nematic phase. Specifically disclosed is a compound represented by formula (i). In the formula, for example, R1 and R2 each represents an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2-8 carbon atoms; ring A1 represents trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; ring A2 represents trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene; Q1 and Q2 each represents a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; and h represents 0, 1 or 2. |
