abstract The invention relates to the use of at least one ether guanidine of the general formula (I) and/or a salt or hydrate thereof, where R 1 = -CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 -O-R 3 , where R 3 is a linear or branched hydrocarbon radical having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and R 2 = H or an optionally branched hydrocarbon radical optionally comprising double bonds having 1 to 22 C atoms, for reducing the growth of microorganisms, and to cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulas comprising at least one ether guanidine of the general formula (I).
