abstract Disclosed are an Eu-activated β-sialon phosphor showing a high luminance, use of this phosphor and a method for producing the same.nSpecifically disclosed is a β-sialon phosphor comprising, as a matrix, β-sialon crystals represented by general formula: Si 6-z Al z O z N 8-z (0<z<4.2), wherein Eu, which serves as an activator, is present as a solid solution in said β-sialon crystals, characterized in that, in the Eu composition, the ratio Eu 2+ /(Eu 2+ +Eu 3+ ) is 0.8 or greater. The amount of Eu in the solid solution in the β-sialon crystals is preferably 0.1-1 mass%.
