abstract Disclosed is a polymerizable compound which has high solubility in a liquid crystal composition, while exhibiting high reactivity with ultraviolet light in a long wavelength range.nAlso disclosed are: a liquid crystal composition which satisfies at least one of such characteristics as high upper limit temperature of the nematic phase, low lower limit temperature of the nematic phase, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability with respect to ultraviolet light and high stability with respect to heat, and has an adequate balance between at least two of the above-mentioned characteristics; and a PSA-VA element which has a short response time, high voltage holding ratio, high contrast ratio, long life and the like.nSpecifically disclosed are: a polymerizable compound wherein at least one 1,3-phenylene structure or 2,7-fluorenediyl is introduced into the skeleton structure for the purpose of obtaining a stable display by constituting a polymer structure having a high polymerization degree by utilizing a long wavelength during the production of a PSA element; a liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound; and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition.
