Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition in which a polymerizable compound is polymerized without inhibiting the generation of a pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules by ultraviolet irradiation for the production of a PSA type display device. By using this, a pretilt angle is appropriately given, alignment stability is good, display failure is not caused or suppressed, and a PSA type display element with excellent display quality and high response speed is provided. The first component contains 5 to 25% by mass of the compound represented by formula (I), and the second component has a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) and its absolute value is greater than 3. A liquid crystal composition containing one or more large compounds and one or more polymerizable compounds having one or more polymerizable functional groups as a third component.
