abstract Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound that is to be used in a liquid crystal display element to which a liquid crystal aligning ability is imparted by polymerization. Due to the polymerizable compound, which polymerizes with the use of no or only an extremely small amount of a photopolymerization initiator, contained therein, the aforesaid composition shows improved alignment stability after the polymerization and causes no trouble in display characteristics, and, therefore, is highly suitable as a component of a practically useful liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal display element using the aforesaid liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound is appropriately usable in liquid crystal display elements of VA type, IPS type and so on.
