abstract Disclosed is a dispersion of rutile titanium oxide particles, wherein the D50 of the particle size distribution of the rutile titanium oxide particles is within the range of 1-15 nm and the D90 thereof is not more than 40 nm as measured by dynamic light scattering, the specific surface area of the rutile titanium oxide particles as determined by a BET method is within the range of 120-180 m 2 /g, and the weight reduction rate is not more than 5% when the rutile titanium oxide particles are heated from 105˚C to 900˚C.nThe dispersion of rutile titanium oxide particles can be obtained by a method which comprises: a first step wherein an aqueous titanium tetrachloride solution is thermally hydrolyzed, thereby obtaining a slurry that contains deposited rutile titanium oxide particles; a second step wherein the slurry obtained in the first step is filtrated and washed with water, thereby removing water-soluble salts dissolved therein; a third step wherein the slurry obtained in the second step is subjected to a hydrothermal reaction in the presence of an organic acid; a fourth step wherein the slurry obtained in the third step is filtrated and washed with water; a fifth step wherein an acid is added to the slurry obtained in the fourth step and a wet dispersion process is performed, thereby obtaining a dispersion; and a sixth step wherein the excess acid and water-soluble salts are removed from the dispersion obtained in the fifth step.
