Disclosed is an α-sialon phosphor which is characterized by being represented by the following general formula: (M) x (Eu) y (Si,Al) 12 (O,N) 16 [wherein M represents at least one element selected from a group consisting of Li, Mg, Ca, Y and lanthanide elements excluding La and Ce and comprising at least Ca], wherein the oxygen content is 1.2 mass% or less and primary particles constituting the α-sialon form a cylindrical structure. When an ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of 250 to 500 nm or visible light is used as an excitation source, the α-sialon phosphor exhibits such a fluorescent property that a peak appears at a wavelength ranging from 595 to 630 nm. |
