abstract |
In an internal combustion engine, SOX trap catalyst (11) capable of trapping of SOX contained in an exhaust gas is disposed in an engine exhaust passageway upstream of NOX occlusion catalyst (12). The SOX trap catalyst (11) has its basicity rendered higher than that of the NOX occlusion catalyst (12) to such an extent that the ratio of NOX purification by the SOX trap catalyst (11) is constantly about 10% or less of the ratio of NOX purification by the NOX occlusion catalyst (12) when the temperature of the SOX trap catalyst (11) is within the temperature range at normal driving, namely, in the range of about 150° to about 400°C. When NOX is to be emitted from the NOX occlusion catalyst (12), the air fuel ratio of exhaust gas flowing into the SOX trap catalyst (11) is temporarily switched from lean to rich. |
