A water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol resin fiber obtained by melt-spinning a material containing as the main component a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol resin having 1,2-diol structural units represented by the general formula (1); and nonwoven fabrics made by using the fiber. The resin is excellent in the solubility in water at low temperature and is depressed in the bubbling as observed in being dissolved in water. Additionally, the invention permits the use of completely saponified PVA in melt forming, which brings about a depression in the production of acetic acid smell and an improve in the working atmosphere: [Chemical formula 1] (1) wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen or a monovalent organic group and may be the same or different from each other; and X is a single bond or a connecting chain. |
