abstract The present invention provides a method for producing a polyvinyl alcohol resin containing a side chain 1,2-diol structure having a small degree of polymerization distribution and a degree of modification distribution. When a vinyl ester monomer and a monomer represented by the general formula (1) are copolymerized in a solvent in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, the monomer is continuously or intermittently used in the polymerization system.
