abstract Disclosed is a process for producing an imidazothiazole derivative represented by the formula (I) which is useful as an intermediate in the production of a carbapenem derivative having an excellent antibacterial effect and a wide antibacterial spectrum, that is, a novel process for nicotinoylation at the position 7 in an imidazo[5,1-b]thiazole ring. The process comprises reacting a compound represented by the formula (II) with a compound represented by the formula (III).
