abstract |
A honeycomb structure minimizing cracking developed in the cell walls thereof separating the cells thereof from each other when the structure is stored in a casing for use. The honeycomb structure is formed by longitudinally arranging, parallel with each other, the cells of a square shape or a shape similar to the square shape in cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction through the cell walls and comprises one or a plurality of columnar honeycomb-shaped ceramic members. A seal material layer is formed on the outer peripheral part of the honeycomb structure, the cell walls continuously formed from the outer peripheral side of the honeycomb structure toward the inside of the honeycomb structure among the cell walls form straightlines in a cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb-shaped ceramic members. The honeycomb structure is characterized in that the straightlines form an angle of 55 to 90° with tangents at their intersections with the outer edges of the honeycomb-shaped ceramic members which form the outer peripheral part of the honeycomb structure. |
