abstract A carbonaceous composite heat spreader includes a plurality of diamond grits (14) present in an amount greater than about 50 % by volume of the heat spreader and a metal matrix (16) holding the diamond grits in a consolidated mass. The metal matrix contains at least about 50 % aluminum by volume. The heat spreader can include a quantity of graphite (12), with the plurality of diamond grits being in substantially intimate contact with the graphite and with the metal matrix holding the graphite and the diamond grits in a consolidated mass. The quantity of graphite can include at least two distinct layers (12a, 12b), of graphite and the diamond grits can be arranged in a layer disposed between the layers of graphite.
