A process for producing an alcohol and a ketone, i.e., 2-adamantanol and 2-adamantanone, from adamantane and molecular oxygen, characterized by oxidizing the adamantane in the presence of a catalyst system containing one or more elements selected from Groups 4 to 10 of the Periodic Table in the long form and of hydrogen and an acid. Adamantane is thus oxidized under mild conditions, whereby 2-adamantanol and 2-adamantanone can be selectively, efficiently, and safely produced with a high selectivity which has not been attained so far. |
