Preventive or therapeutic agents for severe diabetic retinopathy containing as the active ingredient hydantoin derivatives represented by the general formula (I), which agents are useful mainly as inhibitors against the evolution into nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy and/or proliferative diabetic retinopathy or inhibitors against the progression of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy and/or proliferative diabetic retinopathy: (I) wherein X is halogeno or hydrogen; and R1 and R2 may be the same or different and are each hydrogen or optionally substituted C1-6 alkyl, or R1, R2 and the nitrogen atom optionally together with an additional nitrogen or oxygen atom may form a 5- or 6-membered heterocycle. |
