abstract A light-emitting device comprises a light-emitting element (3) for emitting exciting light provided on a substrate (2) and a wavelength converter (4) for converting the exciting light into visible light. The light-emitting device emits the visible light as output light. The wavelength converter (4) has wavelength converting layers (4a, 4b, 4c) containing as phosphors resin matrices each composed of at least one kind of semiconductor ultrafine particles of average particle size of 20 nm or less and at least one kind of phosphorescent substance of average particle size of 0.1 μm or more. With this, the self-quenching caused among the phosphors is reduced, and high luminous efficiency is achieved.
