Optical recording material |
abstract |
A novel photochromic liquid crystal is disclosed which is composed of a diarylethene compound having photochromism and liquid crystallinity at the same time. This compound is composed of a photochromic diarylethene compound whose two aryl groups respectively have a mesogen group. This photochromic liquid crystal exhibits a large birefringence change ascribable to photoisomerization or phase transition and has high durability against repeated birefringence changes. A side chain polymer liquid crystal containing the above photochromic liquid crystal is useful as an optical recording material. In this optical recording material, an optical modulation can be induced by irradiation with light at a temperature near the Tc, and thus this optical recording material can be applied to optical computing devices, optical memories and the like. Further, this optical recording material can be used as a material for recording layers of optical recording media such as optical disks and optical memory cards. |
