titleOfInvention Process for producing optically active lactone
abstract A process for producing an optically active lactone which comprises reacting a hydroxycarboxylic ester (A) obtained by the reaction of a racemic modification of a lactone with an alcohol with a 1-alkoxybicyclo[3.3.0]-2-oxaoctane represented by the formula [1], a 1-hydroxybicyclo[3.3.0]-2-oxaoctane represented by the formula [2], or a bicyclo[3.3.0]-2-oxa-1-octene represented by the formula [3] to form a diastereomer mixture (B), separating the diastereomer mixture (B) into the diastereomers, decomposing at least one of the diastereomers separated to form a hydroxycarboxylic ester (C), and causing the hydroxycarboxylic ester (C) to undergo cyclization to thereby obtain the (R) or (S) isomer of the lactone. The (R) or (S) isomer of a lactone which is useful as a perfume can be efficiently obtained.
