abstract Improved methods and compositions for stabilizing a subterranean formation containing water sensitive minerals are provided. The formation is contacted with a water soluble stabilizing compound that dissolves to form a divalent organic cation. The stabilizing compound inhibits the swelling and migration of clays and fines, thereby alleviating loss in permeability of the formation.
