abstract |
A clay stabilizing agent is made by polymerizing diallyldimethylammonium chloride with sulfur dioxide in the presence of an erythorbic acid salt as polymerization reaction rate retarder, to form a solid cationic copolymer having the structural formula:n wherein the nitrogen-to-sulfur ratio is from about 1 to about 1.4 and n is such that the molecular weight is about 1000 to about 100,000. When dissolved in an aqueous carrier fluid, the copolymer is particularly effective in prevenĀting clay swelling and/or fines migration. |
