abstract The invention discloses compounds of the pyridinium series useful for the management of diabetes and aging-related vascular complications, and particularly in the treatment of complications of diabetes mellitus and other aging-related conditions including kidney disease, nerve damage, atherosclerosis, retinopathy, dermatological conditions and discoloration of teeth by breaking preformed AGE, of general formula (I), or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein, R1, R2 and X are as defined in the specification. The invention also discloses method of preparation of the compounds of the series and pharmaceutical composition having one or more compounds as defined above as active ingredients. The invention further discloses a method of treatment of a diabetic patient by administering the compounds as defined above, either singly or in combination with other drugs for antidiabetic therapy.
