abstract The invention concerns a process for oxidising a primary alcohol such as a carbohydrate using an oxidising agent in the presence of a catalytic amount of a di-tertiary-alkyl nitroxyl, wherein the alcohol is oxidised using an oxidic compound of a period 4 or 5 metal having an oxidation state of a least +3 as an oxidising agent, for example manganese dioxide.
