A process for producing a high-purity polysaccharide containing hydrophobic groups which comprises: a first-stage reaction in which a C12-50 hydroxylic hydrocarbon or a sterol is reacted with a diisocyanate compound represented by the formula OCN-R1-NCO (wherein R1 is a C¿1-50? hydrocarbon group) to produce a hydrophobic compound the molecule of which has an isocyanate group and a residue of one molecule of the reacted hydrocarbon or sterol; a second-stage reaction in which the hydrophobic isocyanate compound obtained in the first-stage reaction is reacted with a polysaccharide to produce a polysaccharide having, as hydrophobic groups, either C12-50 hydrocarbon groups or steryl groups; and purifying the product of the second-stage reaction with a ketone solvent. |
