The present invention relates to a process for quantifying entities, comprising the steps of n (a) mixing an effective detection amount of a (proto-) porphyrin represented by formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R 1 independently represents a radical selected from the group consisting of --CH(OH)--CH 3 , --CH═CH 2 , --CH 2 --CH 3 , --H, --COCH 3 , --CHO, --CH(OH)--CH 2 OH, and --CH═CHO 2 H; n R 2 independently is selected from C 1-3 alkyl, and preferably is methyl, n R 3 independently represents an aryl or aralkyl group, and preferably is phenyl; and n M is a metal selected from Fe, Co, Ga, Sn, Zn, Cr, Mg, Ni, Ge, and Cu, n with a sample suspected to contain entities to be detected; n (b) collecting the (proto)porphyrin containing complexes formed; and n (c) detecting and quantifying the collected complexes. n Further, the invention relates to a chemiluminescent composition comprising a compound defined in formula I. |
